Blues with a Catch

I love blues and its variations. AI recommendations occasionally surface something unexpectedly great. But genuinely new, impressive artists in this genre are rare.

Recently I discovered a new voice – Maria Vargas: deep, with that signature raw edge, quality arrangements, and even a convincing live-stage feel. The kind of presence that makes you think this person truly lives every note and fills concert halls.

You’ve already guessed – it’s an AI project. The music, the performer – all AI.

Did my attitude toward the artist (if you can call Vargas that) change? Honestly – no. The songs still sound great. But I started noticing details: everything was a little too polished, a bit sterile. I hadn’t paid attention before, but now I could hear a subtle unnaturalness.

A couple of weeks later, the same thing happened with Mikhail Bennett – that same “sterile” sound, but this time complete with music videos and promotion. There was a moment of rejection, but it didn’t last. I enjoy the performance – so what does it matter who’s behind it? Even when we’re talking about the blues, a genre that has always been about raw grit, human pain, and personal scars.

Yes, AI has reached even the most “soulful” music.

What’s next? We’ll inevitably drown in a sea of high-quality synthetic content blended with traditional compositions. Powerful voices. Give neural networks another six months, and they’ll learn to sing slightly off-key, crack their voice, and add that “live” imperfection.

My take: “Dissolved AI” will become the norm we stop noticing. Meanwhile, genuine, unpolished human emotion – complete with mistakes and real breath – will become the new premium. Coexistence is inevitable. We’ll adapt.

Worth a listen? Judge for yourself:

P.S. If on this cozy evening you still crave the real deal – genuine, warm, human suffering – put on “Your Heart Is As Black As Night” by the inimitable (though I’m no longer so sure) Beth Hart. Every breath in that song is real ;)
